David Shapiro, Barry Schwabsky, and Vincent Katz

This was a great evening at the 11th St Bar. I've never been to a reading containing as many artists, this because of Barry, but the way it should be.

I was happiest as many of my art friends got to finally hear David. Barry read poems which seemed to have an empty maybe urban sky as much of their juxtaposed content.

It takes a long time to 'get ' a poet. Vincent Katz joined Barry to read some things they have collaborated upon. It  filled out the evening in a good way, I guess I mean now here were two art related poets, and then...

Well I thought this one of David's best readings. The classics work over and over as sheer poetry and David's delivery brings them into the charismatic performance genre which had no problem in dealing with the juke box and bar banter.

Barry suggested  David make an encore and someone said they thought that a first at a poetry reading.

David for me is just our poet of the time, he will follow Ashbery and quite possibly be able to keep poetry alive til another one as capable comes along.

I hope this is the beginning of something.
