Doug Wheeler at Zwirner

This piece --"Wheeler’s SA MI 75 DZ NY 12 (2012) explores the materiality of light while emphasizing the viewer’s physical experience of infinite space. The exhibition marks the first presentation of an “infinity environment” by the artist in New York."

I came with the idea of the sublime, and the over whelming feeling was of an Arctic space. Amazing really and somewhat frightening.

The idea of putting on these protective booties then made me think of maybe of a Woody Allen movie and everyone in, 'Heaven .' The pictures all most certainly make everyone very hip looking like a J Crew catalog.

Doug was a friend of McCracken's and I think a little of something I always thought about John, that the illusion was a bit corny, I wish like Heaven the idea, that we could see the cracks a bit.

I am a New York school artist and even though the idea is forgotten here I liked the grey box of Judd and Morris for exactly what it was. That said I guess I have followed right into the illusion with everyone else.

Certainly its been a long time coming for Doug.
